Simple Sugar Cookie Recipe

By Posted on 5 3 m read 184 views

Beautifully decorated sugar cookies are great to look at, but you want cookies that look good AND taste good too. A friend once sent me photos of cute little decorated sugar cookies that her neighbor had made. I was in awe until my friend said, “Sasha (sigh), they were so pretty but they did not taste as good as yours.”  What a let down?! The key to great sugar cookies is to start with great cookie recipe and decorated from there.  So I’m sharing my simple sugar cookie recipe with you. This cookie has the perfect balance of simple sweetness and soft cookie texture.

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Mix together the confectioner’s sugar and butter until smooth in a stand mixer.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract and continue mixing. Once everything is combined the mixture may still be a bit lumpy and that fine.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, about a 1/2 cup at a time, while mixing.

    * The dough is a good consistency when majority of the dough sticks to the flat beater and not the sides of the bowl. The dough also should not stick to your fingers.

  • Place a sheet of parchment paper on your workspace and lightly dust with flour. Then roll out the dough on the parchment paper. Lightly flour the rolling pin if dough starts to stick.
  • Use cookie cutters of your choice to cut out cookie shapes.

  • Place a clean sheet of parchment paper on the cookie sheet and transfer cookie cutouts to the cookie sheet.

  • Place the cookie sheet on the middle rack and bake for 7 minutes.
  • Let cookies cool before decorating.

These Trolls cookies were actually my favorite to decorate! Happy baking!
